Base Flashing

Is the portion of a flashing attached to or resting on the deck to direct the flow of water onto the roof covering


Blend

In shingles it is the mixture of various colored granules on the surface


Blind Nailing

when the tops of nails are concealed by layers of roofing


Blisters

bubbles on the surface of asphalt roofs


Bridging

reroofing method where new shingles are placed where the contour of the old roofing was previously

Dormer

window projecting through a roof that is sloped


Drip Edge

metal strips on the edge of your roof to allow water run


Drip Course

shingles that slightly overhang off the edge of your roof


Exposure

the portion of the roofing shingle that is exposed


Lap

when one roofing materials overlaps another


Lock Shingles

a type of shingle that offers a mechanical locking feature


Mansard Roof

the vertical portion of your roof


Normal Slope Application

a shingle installation method calling for spacing of 4 and 21 inches per ft.


Saturant

asphalt that is used to waterproof and improve roofs overall strength


Side Lap

a horizontal lap


Slope

the angle/degree of a roof planes incline


Soffit

the underside of an eave that is finished


Soffit Vent

Opening needed for intake of outside air. Good for attic ventilation.


Spire

roof tapering up to a point


Square

roof measurement for 100 square feet of roof covering


Butt

The part of the shingle that is exposed, often times referred to as the tab


Cap Flashing

A way to prevent the flow of water from getting behind the base flashing. Done so by flashing on a vertical surface.


Cement

a substance, that binds surfaces together when cured. 


Class “A” 

Rating given to the highest fire resistant roofing materials


Cupola 

The structure that you often times see rising above the main roof.


Dead Level

The structure that you often times see rising above the main roof.


Double Coverage

a way of applying shingles where there are two complete layers
